“Blue Moon” is a classic ballad originally written by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart in 1934. Elvis Presley recorded a cover version of the song in 1956 for his debut album Elvis Presley.
Presley’s version of “Blue Moon” became one of his most ic onic and enduring songs. He transforms the ballad into a rockabilly-influenced pop song, complete with his signature crooning vocal style.
It was recorded at RCA Studios in Nashville on January 19, 1956 during Presley’s first major recording session for RCA Records.
“Blue Moon” was released in March 1956 as the B-side to “Heartbreak Hotel,” which became Presley’s first #1 hit. It appears as track 2 on Elvis Presley, which was also Presley’s first #1 album.
The song features Presley’s vocals backed by his core band members – guitarist Scotty Moore, bassist Bill Black, and drummer D.J. Fontana.
Presley later performed the song during his early TV appearances on The Dorsey Brothers Stage Show and The Ed Sullivan Show.
“Blue Moon” remains one of Presley’s most popul ar early recordings and a standout track from his debut album.
